Experience with OS release upgrades using Ubuntu

I am planning to perform an Ubuntu release upgrade from version 24.04 to version 26.04 using do-release-upgrade. Does anyone have experience with this, and what steps do I need to take—or should I take—before the upgrade?

What should I keep in mind when backing up my system?

Are there any issues during the upgrade?

What did I need to keep in mind after the upgrade?

Kind regards
Matteo

They are talking about a SuiteCRM upgrade, whereas I’m talking about a Linux OS upgrade from one LTS version of Ubuntu to the next. Those are two completely different things. Never mind — thank you very much for trying to help me.

Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (Resolute Raccoon)

Upgrades from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS to Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS now enabled

Steps for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS → 26.04 LTS

  1. Back up your data. Save personal files, important configuration, and application/database data. Verify the backup.
  2. Update Ubuntu 24.04.
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
sudo reboot
  1. Ensure the release upgrader is installed.
sudo apt install ubuntu-release-upgrader-core

For Ubuntu Desktop, the upgrader is normally already installed.

  1. Check the upgrade settings. In /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades, ensure:
Prompt=lts
  1. Start the release upgrade.
sudo do-release-upgrade

Follow the prompts and review package removals and configuration-file changes. The upgrade to 26.04.1 LTS is officially enabled.

  1. Reboot when prompted.

  2. Verify the upgrade.

lsb_release -a
systemctl --failed
sudo apt update

Check networking, drivers, applications, and important services.

  1. Re-enable third-party repositories only after confirming they support Ubuntu 26.04.

Note: Don’t use -d for the normal upgrade. Read the Ubuntu 26.04 release notes before starting.

Hello Matteo,

I’ve got two - three servers still pending with this step but would start this winter.

Most important are the PHP / DB versions. You can check the compatibility matrix for Suite and the 24 and 26 versions.
If you use Ondrej PHP, you should be good to go right away.

I’d take a complete DB Dump + file backup of Suite and download it from the server, just in case.
In some cases, you would want to do a DB dump in a compatibility mode (in case you’re migrating from MySQL to Maria or similar - doing this manually in the SQL file is time consuming - so better plan before hand - I learned this the hard way  )

Other than that, “it’s just a server”. As long as everything is configured properly, Suite runs smoothly on it.

@BastianHammer are you planning to release the video in this? :face_with_peeking_eye:

I didn’t plan to .. it’s a Unix Sys Admin topic.
If you give Hermes Agent SSH access to the server, it can do everything automatically.
Other than that, it’s not really SuiteCRM or open source CRM related.
The same topic / question would hold true for Drupal, WordPress, Mautic, …
