What is the correct way to create a custom field but add it to the main table and to the *_cstm table?

I need to create a series of custom fields. These must be added in the main table of the module. To this end I have been using the method described in this post Using the Vardef Extensions.

Is this the correct way to do it? Or is there a better way to accomplish this task?
