SuiteCRM8 email configuration saga

Installed Suite 8.1.2 on a shared server. Separate subdomain.
Email configuration is a bear, but got most of the settings working.
However, SMTP has invalid system entries that I cannot correct or remove. As a result, suite8 does not display or send all the emails.
Looks like one system entry every time I add a new user. Any help?
We use SuiteCRM version 7 in production. Would like to convert to Suite8
