Does suite crm save all custom field data as well as custom configurations during an upgrade? How do I make sure I protect this data?

The custom field data is saved into the database in tables appended with _cstm. So for example, custom fields for the projects module are saved into the table projects_cstm.
My custom field data has always been safe during upgrades - i don’t think the tables are altered in any way.
