Does anyone know if Microsoft is or has definitivley announced an end to APP passwords for SMTP?
I know they did for IMAP a while back, there seems to be some confusion on this issue. I’ve set up a bunch of SMTP App passwords for O365 and it works without issue.
A Google search has a bunch of threads with not really a definitive answer.
Anyone know?
I found this, it doesn’t specifically talk about app passwords, but it says it’s shutting down smtp.office365.com, so I think pretty much that kills app passwords?
Yes, you’re correct to be concerned about this issue—there’s a bit of confusion around the future of SMTP authentication and app passwords in Microsoft 365 (O365) environments.
As of recent announcements from Microsoft, they have been phasing out Basic Authentication for various services, including SMTP client submission (smtp.office365.com). This is part of their larger effort to improve security by moving users away from older, less secure authentication methods (like Basic Authentication and App Passwords) in favor of modern authentication protocols like OAuth 2.0.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they set a date for it to stop working, and then extended the period near that date.
It’s very hard to get people to move in this kind of thing.
And it’s very disruptive to have things break when the date arrives. No matter how much they warn people, some will be caught by surprise and business operations will be halted… And hate for Microsoft will ensue.
