Getting email to work via gmail?

I am brand new to SuiteCRM. I just got a new server up and running just for SuiteCRM. I was able to do the web install just fine but now when I log in as admin I can’t get the CRM to work with gmail. If I try to send a test email I get a popup with this error:

Error:SMTP connect() failed. https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting

I did some digging and found a few posts that said if I turn on 2 step authentication and then make a new app password it should resolve the issue but I tried that to no avail. For the record I am running SuiteCRM 7.7.8 on Nethserver which is based on CentOS 6.8 (with kernel 2.6.32-642.11.1.el6.x86_64). I have mysql 5.1.73-7.el6, php 5.5.38, and Apache 2.2.15.

I feel like there should be a very clear guide for setting up email as it is so core to a crm and gmail is so popular. but I simply can not find anything on here or other parts of the internet so I thought I’d as here.

For gmail generally this is Solved by setting “Less secure apps” ON" in the gmail settings.

Thanks, I was able to resolve it. that way. but because I was using GSuite instead of a regular email account I could not enable it the regular way. I had to log into my GSuite admin dashboard to do it which is apparently different than how you do it with a personal gmail account.

Issue is resolved now. :slight_smile:

Does that means SuiteCRM is still a less secure app according to Google?

Hi, welcome to the Community! :tada:

Yes, that is true.

But Google is removing support for that in a few months, and I know that the SuiteCRM Team have this item on their schedule, to ensure we will be ready for that step in it becomes mandatory.
