Email Step says it's sent a test mail but nothing's been received

Hey everyone. As a suiteCRM newbie, a brand new instance of SuiteCRM has been installed on my shared hosting server. I’m at the email setup step and while everything looks like it’s ok (says a test mail has been delivered), I’m not receiving anything. I’ve tried multiple SMTP email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo! and Zoho) with different test email addresses. Nothing is working despite the “sent mail” modal window.

Any idea what this troublesome issue could be? I’ve attached a screenie with the hopes that it might ring some bells.

When I go to set up smtp for gmail in SuiteCRM, it selects the port as 587 and SMTP over TLS not SSL.
