Email formating

When i create an email template and format it a certain way…But when I send the email its all jumble into one paragraph…Is there a fix for this

How have you formatted the email template? Have you used the TinyMCE editor? How does the template look when you view it?

Can you please tell me why when i put $contact_first_name $contact_last_name or $contact_name it doesn’t get picked up on my email templates i send out
