Can someone briefly describe how to use the dynamic drop-down field. I have searched the forum and documentation but have not been successful in finding material on it.

Maybe you searched only for SuiteCRM sites.
Just try searching for SugarCRM:

Make sure you don’t follow instructions written for SugarCRM 7.0 or later, that’s a different beast. But most of what you will find is for SugarCRM 6.5 and older, which (in general) also applies to SuiteCRM.
