is there a facility for putting holidays/days off into a calender so if you forward a next contact date into that day then it warns you or blocks you - also this can be given to anyone managing leads so they are not dropped into someone diary who is away and subsequently cannot contact the lead

these features are not part of SuiteCRM, I am afraid. You might try looking for some add-on in the SuiteCRM Store, but I never heard of anything like what you ask.
These features could be developed with custom code, of course.
