Cannot send email - (error: 5.5.2 Send hello first)

Greetings,

I’m banging my head against the wall with this one.

Roughly two weeks ago, I had email properly configured and working with the below settings:

Type: Exchange
Server: mail.mydomain.com
From: crm@mydomain.com
SMTP Auth: yes
User: crm@mydomain.local
Password:
SSL or TLS: TLS
Port: 25

Now - and without changing any settings related to email - I’m getting the following error message:

Error:The following From address failed: crm@mydomain.com
SMTP server error: 5.5.2 Send hello first

Anyone know how to fix this? I’ve scoured the SugarCRM forums and Google for related errors, but I’m not turning up much of use.

My SugarCRM.log, even in verbose, doesn’t give me too much related to this either. It just echoes the same error.

I’d appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

Well, Google-searching of that specific error message leads me to believe that this is actually an incompatibility with the way PHPMAILER formats AUTH requests for Exchange. Something to do with not sending HELO’s at the proper time.

I ended up pointing my SuiteCRM directly at my smart host (a spam firewall) and that started working without an issue. It would be nice if I didn’t have to do this, but it works and that’s good enough for me.

Posting here in case anyone else runs into this issue.
