Add users directly to project

Is there a way to add users to a project instead of going by group? We’re using SuiteCRM for student workers, and it would take way too much time to create individual groups with assigned roles for each project and then add them in. We’d like to be able to just add them individually (or even let them add themselves).

I’ve already tried assigning a task to a mock-up student, but it then added the entire Student Security Group. When I deleted the group, the student lost access immediately. Also, this is not the same as asking about Assignees. I know how to do that; it’s getting additional team members on board that I can’t find out how to do.
