Can the TinyMCE be upgraded to a newer version to include more options like uploading a picture?
Or is the editor included fairly customized to make upgrading it a real chore?

It is more complex as core changes are required to fully upgrade and several changes are required.
It is something we are working on and will update you with progress.

It looks like Including images via copy/paste is a must have requirement in our case.
