Security groups as teams?

is it possible to use security groups as teams, to inform all members of the team of changes to contacts, notes, accounts?

You can create security groups and assign multiple users to those groups to assign records to. Is this the functionality you require?

What I want to ensure is that all of the group is informed of changes either by the Activity stream or via email.
