As the “order by priority” doesn’t work properly (alphabetically rather than by priority order) is there a way of using the advanced search to show, for example, just the high priority tasks that are overdue or due this week.
I’ve had a quick look and advanced search seems limited in its options compared to advanced search in other similar tools.

You can add options to the Advanced search by navigating to Admin -> Studio -> (module name) -> Layouts -> Search -> Advanced Search
Then drag the fields from “Hidden” to “Default”
You won’t be able to search for specifics like Overdue tasks out of the box, but I imagine that you could make a custom Checkbox field in studio to keep track of whether a Task is Overdue or not. Then, add it to the Advanced Search Options.
