Changing the data type of the custom fields

Hi,

We have several custom currency fields in the cases module. Now we would like these fields to be text fields. As we know there is no option in the studio to change the data type of the fields.

However I came across a post which suggested that you might do it directly in the mysql DB. Can I go ahead with this option? Will I loose any data?

Please suggest.

Modify the vardefs/custom vardefs for the fields in the file structure.
