Assigning a automated reference number to an Opportunity

Hello,

I’d like a unique reference number to be automatically assigned to each opportunity that is logged on the system. This would then stay with the opportunity as it’s project reference number and invoice reference.

This reference number needs to be 6 digits at least (000001) and the be assigned in chronological order.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to create a custom file either in order to copy and paste the code into it.
